Zimbabwe is honoured to join the international community in commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development.

The Declaration affirmed a fundamental principle: development is a human right, and every individual and nation must have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from development.

Forty years on, this principle remains highly relevant. Poverty, inequality, climate change, debt pressures and unequal access to technology continue to constrain the development prospects of many developing countries.

Zimbabwe therefore calls for strengthened international solidarity, greater access to affordable development finance, technology transfer and meaningful participation of developing countries.

#dandarostreets Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has urged residents to dress decently when visiting the Central Business District, warning that people dressed inappropriately could be asked by police to cover up.

Mafume said there was a need to maintain decency in society, arguing that the city cannot have people walking around with their “behinds out in the open.”

He said the intention was to encourage decent dressing and avoid a situation where authorities would have to introduce a dress code or uniform for people entering the CBD.

If Zimbabwe plays its cards well, we could be entering a period of significant economic opportunity. Mnangagwa has had his ugly and indefensible patches, but, viewed through the longer lens of economic reconstruction, the country is broadly moving in the right direction.

The land question is settled. We no longer need the anti-Western megaphone diplomacy that characterised an earlier era. Whatever strategic purpose that rhetoric served at the time, Zimbabwe now has more to gain from pragmatic economic diplomacy than ideological confrontation.

The next frontier is financial-system reform. If we can recalibrate our banking, capital-markets and payments architecture to operate at a standard comparable with South Africa’s, Zimbabwe could rebuild what was once one of the stronger financial systems in sub-Saharan Africa. That means strengthening correspondent banking relationships, deepening domestic capital markets, improving monetary credibility, restoring investor confidence and positioning Harare as a regional financial centre.

The geopolitical opportunity is equally important. Over the next two and a half years, as the United States reassesses its African economic partnerships under Trump and South Africa potentially enters a more complicated strategic relationship with Washington, Zimbabwe could position itself as a credible alternative regional investment and financial hub.

European capital already uses South African investment banks and financial institutions to structure and channel financing into major energy projects in Mozambique and Namibia, including multi-billion-dollar LNG developments. Zimbabwe should be asking a simple question: why should Harare remain merely a consumer of regional financial intermediation when it has the potential to become a financial intermediary itself?

With credible monetary reform, stronger institutions, bankable infrastructure projects, predictable investment rules and disciplined international engagement, Zimbabwe could position itself as a complementary, and eventually competitive, financial gateway into the region.

This is not about replacing South Africa overnight. It is about building the institutional capacity to make Zimbabwe an increasingly viable alternative.

The opportunity is there. What is required now is less ideological theatre and more economic statecraft. (My next article)

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY to a true Zimbabwean icon whose music, wisdom and legacy will live forever. 🎶🇿🇼 If he were still with us today, I know without doubt he would have called me and said, “Iwe Wicknell, ndi TUKU urikupiko nhasi ibirthday rangu hausi kuzviziva here ?” 😂❤️ and wherever I was, I would definitely have driven straight to see him and given him US$74,000 CASH to celebrate his 74th birthday.

Sadly, he is no longer physically with us, but that does not mean we cannot celebrate him. So in his loving memory, SELMA, SANDRA and SHAMISO will each receive US$15,000, and the remaining US$29,000 goes to MAMA DAISY. That makes exactly US$74,000 for 74 YEARS. ❤️💵

I would have loved to come and celebrate this special day with you all in Madziva personally, but im away in London for a few days so the four of you can please go and see MADZIBABA CHIPAGA tomorrow and collect the money.
