Our collaborative investigation about the environmental impacts of Indonesian nickel mining giant Harita Group has won the 2026 Society of Publishers in Asia (@sopasia) Award for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment!
This investigation with The Gecko Project (@geckoproj), Deutsche Welle (@dwnews), KCIJ-Newstapa (@kcij_newstapa), Tempo (@temponewsroom ), and The Guardian (@guardian) showed that the Harita Group had been aware for years that its mining operations in Indonesia were contaminating local waters with the carcinogen chromium hexavalent, which gained notoriety in the major motion picture ‘Erin Brokovich,’ starring Julia Roberts.
The judges highlighted the strength of the submission: “Chalk up another stellar moment for consortia journalism.”
Harita Group’s Indonesian nickel mines feed the supply chains of some of the world’s biggest electric vehicle makers. But the conglomerate’s own internal monitoring showed the operation was polluting local waters for years.

An agent offering his services told our undercover journalists that “there will be no trace of the Russian company, and the payment will be successful,” seemingly unconcerned about facilitating the payment for such a deal.

OCCRP has today announced a strategic partnership with @wsocialeurope.
“W” is a social media network designed to counter the rise of bot-driven disinformation and data privacy erosion on mainstream platforms.
Introduced earlier this year by privacy expert Anna Zeiter at the World Economic Forum, W Social was built as a European-hosted, federated alternative to U.S.-based tech giants.
"We are seeing investigative journalism increasingly drowned out on traditional social platforms by algorithmic bias, state-backed bot armies, and coordinated smear campaigns,” said OCCRP Co-Founder Paul Radu (@IDashboard).
"Partnering with W Social is an opportunity to help build a reliable information ecosystem powered by OCCRP's investigative reporting so we can better serve the public."
