Congratulations to Animal Care Specialist Brandi Taylor on receiving an Animal Keeper’s Forum (AKF) Excellence in Journalism Award during the 2025 National Association of Zookeepers Conference!

Brandi was recognized for her research published in the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) quarterly journal, which explored whether artificial kelp installations can help reduce UV penetration in sea lion pools and support pinniped eye health.

After collecting data over two consecutive summers, Brandi and her team found that artificial kelp does help mitigate UV exposure in the water. Her findings have meaningful implications for pinniped care facilities across the country, demonstrating how innovative research can help advance animal wellbeing at DZCA and beyond.
