For years, extremists and populists have enjoyed quite unprecedented levels of power and influence, at least in traditional liberal democracies. It is hight time to learn from mistakes and fight back.

Extremists are on the rise globally, especially so in #Europe. Liberals need to find an adequate response, which is very much easier said than done.

Housing crisis should be an issue of highest priority for leaders and policy makers. Extremists are so apt at exploiting it.
Important as good housing policy is, other approaches can reduce the burden of housing costs.

Nobody covered themselves in glory this time, but @JoeBiden is still infinitely more decent and - yes that's right - competent candidate.

.@Bundeskanzler is right. Moderate, sane politics should not engage, let alone ape, extremists anywhere. But we must learn from past mistakes; on immigration, social cohesion, respecting the electorate and more. #Politics
Voting is a right and a privilege, and it is exceedingly consequential this time.
Although traditional parties have not responded well to challenges such as immigration, solution can't be found in voting for extremists.

I have written an op-ed for @TheEconomist on the significance of the results of the 31st March local elections in Istanbul and Turkey.
I argue that the results of the local elections are a milestone in Turkey’s history. With most local power now entrusted to the political opposition by voters, Turkey is no longer devoid of options; its trajectory is firmly set towards democracy again.
This victory showed that true democratic power lies in the hands of the people and citizens can form much stronger alliances than political elites.
It is a turning-point that carries profound implications, not only for Turkey but also for its immediate region and beyond. It shows how authoritarian tendencies can be challenged and serves as an example to the world.
Following a generation marked by democratic decay and economic decline, the Republic of Turkey enters its second century with a renewed faith in democracy.
