For the NHL Vezina Trophy, Spencer Knight (+6600) is a small intriguing long shot that I'm entering the new season with as we await the rest of the congested field to provide appealing entry points.
The Chicago Blackhawks had some hopeful moments last season, but ultimately finished as one of the worst teams in the league via a 29-39-14 record for a league second worst 72 points, 2.56 GF/G (30th), 3.29 GA/G (27th), 16.9% PP% (29th) and 83.6% PK% (2nd). Yet, what was hidden within the up and down season was Knight's first season as a full-time starter via 19-25-0, 2.82 GAA, .902 SV%, 3 SO with a 10.9 GSAE (14th in NHL). With a team in front of him that was 30th in CF% (45.60), 32nd in SF% (44.38), 30th in GF% (43.27), 32nd in xGF% (42.25) and 32nd in SCF% (43.29), Knight still managed to maintain a SV% above .900 with a GAA (2.80) that rivalled the likes of Jakob Dobes (2.78), Connor Hellebuyck (2.86), Ilya Sorokin (2.68) and Jeremy Swayman (2.71) with a fraction of the defensive ecosystem.
It's a loaded field littered with future HOF candidates which makes it one hell of an uphill climb, but a talent injection to the roster via Bowen Byram, Patrick Kane, Roman Kantserov and Anton Frondell and a young roster with another year of marinating and maturing should provide Knight with a possible spring Knight into the type of success that could put his name into the conversation.
