I’ll play. (Thread)
These stats are surface level, output metrics, not stats an actual analyst uses to measure performance. My gran who hates cricket can sort that table & tell you who the best bowler is - it’s a trivial use of stats & level of analysis. #SAvIND
@grantbn6 And he’s one of the few domestic bats that CLEARLY has a scalable game across the two longer formats for the top level, too. I’d be more confident in him having a top level test career than even a Brevis, and imo he’s already got a better game than Verreyne. Mad to write him off
That wasn’t a choke. You need a bit of luck to win a T20 tournament, & you’re unlikely to win it undefeated just because of the nature of the beast. You can run into one knock, & we did. I was actually hoping we’d lose to the Windies/Zim after India just to get it out the way. 😩
After Markram’s debut, there was a period he had only played 48 of the 92 games we played since.
That’s 2 seasons of prime development wasted.
Hopefully we learn from that when we unleash the likes Pretorius.
We nearly repeated the error with Stubbs & got bailed out by injury.
It should not be lost, with Aiden Markram showcasing his peerless & ridiculous ability consistently on the biggest stage in cricket, how many on SA Cricket Twitter wanted us to move on from him.
Some humble pie all round, I hope.
Since Markram broke through & showed his level, we haven’t produced a single bat with more ability.
But there were calls to drop him consistently & we wasted quite a few periods of growth & development doing that, when he should’ve just been left to swim & figure it out.
Just pretending that the dodgy side screen wasn’t there, hey?
“The setup” is a bit of a reach when the over relied on the fact that he couldn’t see the ball out the hand. 😒
For the kids who weren’t around when it happened live:

@shamsi90@Werries_ It would set a fatal signal to young cricketers everywhere regarding test cricket if we do this, gents.
Rather free him up if he struggles between approaches & give him the license that Brooks/Pant/Head get at number 5 to play the same way, and let De Zorzi bat at 3.
If you haven’t seen this video, please do. It’s a communications masterclass.
It’s gracious criticism. It’s leadership.
From the moment he asked to respond in English because he wants to be clear about certain things. Not a man finding buzzwords.
He used previous examples. He never aligned with Vinicius’ character. He never shaded Mourinho’s character. It was the action he fully focused on.
And was even gracious to Prestianni. He mentioned Mbappe’s love for diplomacy in most situations but he was clear about what he heard. That’s knowledge of people and patterns.
It’s been a while I’ve listened to any leader speak with absolute wisdom.
He said there should be a place for apologies and it doesn’t have to be kill or be killed. There should be a middle ground but he was clear about what he disliked — the lack of leadership Jose Mourinho showed.
That was courageous. You can tell why he was captain of club and country and is now a coach of one of the biggest clubs on earth as a black man.
Absolute respect.
The big calls were:
- Linde/Nortje/Bosch: Can’t risk 20% of your overs needing to be from slow left arms imo and Bosch offers more than Nortje.
- Stubbs vs Smith: Had to go Stubbs, Miller needs a gamestate partner not just a finisher, if Brevis is going to get a free hit at 4.
Shukri’s nailed that. That’s our strongest XI. Lucky break getting Ricks & Stubbs back, then about the roles. Stubbs in Hussey role, Brevis with the license, Miller as your gun, and your top 3 all 100-capable. Jansen + Bosh as your 140 kph big hitters, then your 3 best bowlers.
Toss Update 🪙
🇨🇦 Canada have won the toss and elected to Bowl first.
We’re all set in Ahmedabad for our opening fixture of the #T20WorldCup 2026! 🏏💥
Here’s how #TheProteas line up for today’s contest. 💪
#Unbreakable
So funny. Brings back a vivid memory for me!
I forgot my bat at an u/13 day-night festival game with a Northerns development team in Pretoria and the 12th man let me open with his instead & I scored my 1st ever 100 with it…but I told him I hated it too. 😂
Mad how that works!
Not his bat. Definitely his runs. 😎🏏
Quinton de Kock’s masterclass in the second KFC T20I came with Dewald Brevis’ bat in hand. 💥
Here’s the story from both sides of this now-iconic knock 😂
#Unbreakable
@BBL Still a dickhead move. Tactic is fine, but tell him that before the ball so he knows not to just flick it to long on for a run. He could’ve gone for a premeditated sweep/boundary shot knowing plan was to keep Smith on strike.
Disrespected Babar as if he was a tail-ender instead.
Jingoistic nationalists reacting to this with threats & outrage that Holder should be banned from the IPL sort of underlines why they’re such unworthy custodians of the game.
He’s spot on - be more like him.
Imagine how boss world cricket would be if the Windies ran it instead!
De Zorzi for Hendricks is a bit of a downgrade but reasonable, Brevis for Stubbs is fair enough, but Ferreira for Klaasen & Smith for Rickelton is a bit light.
Think Ricks should’ve come in to open with QdK if Aiden was 3 or 4, or Stubbs in at 3 or 4 if Aiden will open.
Bowling & lower order is stacked, great to see Linde make it, but we’re missing one more top order bat.
Reeza, Rickelton, Stubbs & Klaasen gone from the last World Cup squad…that’s a lot of power missing without upgrading, imo.
One of Stubbs/Ricks at least should’ve made it.
England will look back and realize that “Bazball” cost them an #Ashes against a very average side.
They’ve never faced a more beatable Australia than this one and they still lost 3-0…even barely proper cricket instead would’ve won them the series.
The test game is dead…had to do something about it like yesterday.
We’ve only been their most competitive rival in the sport!
The Ashes is a money-spinning big bro-little bro rivalry, Border-Gavaskar is a money-spinning rivalry; the actual sporting rivalry is not profitable…
Reigning World Test Champions South Africa are unlikely to play another Test in Australia soil until late 2030, and even then any Test series Down Under will probably not include visits to Melbourne or Sydney.

😂😂😂💀
Seriously though, you can’t take the level of cricket seriously, at least for GOAT conversations, until at least the 70’s.
No matter how much it hurts Aussie feelings about Bradman.
And he had the gall to say that the bat that most reminds him of himself is Sachin😂
