The Charleston Regional Aviation Authority (CRAA) joins the State of South Carolina and the nation in mourning the untimely passing of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a steadfast advocate for South Carolina whose unwavering support of aviation and transportation infrastructure helped shape the future of Charleston International Airport.
Throughout his distinguished career in public service, Senator Graham championed critical federal investments that fueled the continued growth and modernization of Charleston International Airport. His leadership in Washington helped secure funding for transformational infrastructure projects, advanced airport technology, strengthened aviation security, and supported initiatives that enhanced passenger experience while positioning Charleston as one of the nation's fastest-growing aviation markets.
Senator Graham was also a strong partner to the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority, working alongside airport leadership to advance long-term capital improvements, promote economic development, and expand commercial air service opportunities. His commitment to ensuring South Carolina remained competitive in the global economy played a significant role in helping Charleston International Airport become the state's busiest airport and a nationally recognized leader in aviation.
"Today, South Carolina has lost one of its greatest champions," said Elliott Summey, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority. "Senator Lindsey Graham understood that airports are economic engines, and he never wavered in his commitment to investing in the infrastructure that drives opportunity, commerce, and connectivity. The growth and success Charleston International Airport has experienced over the years bears the unmistakable imprint of his leadership and advocacy. On behalf of our Board of Directors, employees, and the millions of travelers we serve each year, we extend our deepest condolences to Senator Graham's family, friends, dedicated staff, and colleagues. We will forever be grateful for his extraordinary service to our nation, our state, and the aviation community."
CRAA Board Chair Helen Hill said Senator Graham's legacy will continue to benefit generations of South Carolinians.
βSenator Graham will be remembered as a remarkable leader whose unwavering support for the Greater Charleston Area has left an indelible mark,β said Hill. βHis commitment to our airport, especially air service development, has not only enhanced our capacity for visitors and residents alike but also fostered economic diversification and played a vital role in the regionβs long-term resilience. Senator Graham's legacy will continue to inspire us as we work to ensure the Charleston area remains a thriving place to live and visit and a welcoming community for commerce.β
The Charleston Regional Aviation Authority honors Senator Graham's decades of distinguished public service and his enduring commitment to advancing South Carolina's aviation industry.
