NEW YORK, UNITED STATES: 4 September 2026 - The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a landmark resolution establishing 27 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, marking a historic milestone in the global fight to protect girls from child marriage and safeguard their rights, dignity, education and future. The resolution was adopted by consensus, bringing all 193 UN Member States behind a unified call for stronger action to eliminate the practice.
The historic resolution was championed by Sierra Leoneβs First Lady and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), H.E. Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, whose years of advocacy for the protection and empowerment of women and girls have helped elevate the issue onto the global stage. The adoption provides an annual international platform for governments, civil society, communities and development partners to intensify awareness, prevention, protection and action against child, early and forced marriage.
Reacting to the adoption, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio said, βToday, the world has spoken with one voice: child, early, and forced marriage has no place in our societies.β She described the resolution as more than symbolic, calling it βa global mandate for actionβ and reaffirming the responsibility of leaders and advocates to ensure that every girl is free to dream, learn and thrive without being forced into marriage.
The achievement is the result of years of collaboration among African First Ladies, grassroots organisations and global child-rights advocates, including Just Rights for Children and its founder, Bhuwan Ribhu. Ribhu welcomed the adoption as a tipping point in the campaign, while stressing that the real work begins now. He called for unified action by governments, civil society, faith leaders, communities and children, with decisive leadership to end child marriage by 2030.
With 27 November now established as an International Day, the global community has a new annual opportunity to turn attention into action and accelerate efforts to end child, early and forced marriage. For Sierra Leone and Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, today's adoption is both a historic victory and a renewed commitment to the millions of girls whose futures remain at risk.

*MAJORITY LEADER AND LEADER OF GOVERNMENT BUSINESS JOINS PRESIDENT BIO AND OTHER HEADS OF STATE TO THE 78TH UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY*
Honourable Mathew Sahr Nyuma, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Sierra Leone's Parliament joins H.EJulius MaadaBio.
Reformation of laws is the forte of any developed country, and itβs the bastion that guides the political and social progress of the state.
Letβs flip back to history; The 1991 Constitution was endorsed three months after the civil war broke out. As part of the process of negotiating the end to the civil war, Article X of the July 1999 Lome Peace Accord provided for a review of the Constitution.
Subsequently, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), established in 2002 also urged the Government of Sierra Leone to give βserious considerationβ to the creation of a βnew constitutionβ, to contribute to human rights and democracy in the country. It was agreed by all political parties that the 1991 Constitution while contributing to the development of peace and stability in the country, does not reflect the modern values of the country and requires amendment to facilitate the continued development of a democratic and stable country.
In July 2013, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma established the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC), which was headed by Justice Edward Cowan. The said committee toured the length and breadth of Sierra Leone holding town hall meetings and engaging stakeholders to give them what they will want to see in the new constitution. They also traveled to South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana to embark on research to know how theirs work so some points could be incorporated into ours.
The Committee consulted several documents, right from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, all three volumes, and other documents that made recommendations towards the review process.
For three years, they painstakingly reviewed the Constitution, compiled their report, and gave their recommendations, reviews, analyses, and findings to the Government of Sierra Leone.
Unfortunately, the said report was never adopted by the Government of Sierra Leone. A week before the chairman died (Justice Edward Cowan), he expressed his disappointment at the Government of Sierra Leone for not only failing to adopt the said document but for wasting taxpayers' money to embark on such a project which turned out not to be fruitful. He intimated on that day, how Sierra Leone has missed out on having a redefined political system that will be guided by a prudent and democratic constitution.
Now, under the auspices of the Bio-led government, a new constitutional process has begun, which seeks to review and adopt the report that was submitted by the CRC in 2017; one which a lot of Sierra Leoneans are looking forward to, as they have expressed their concerns towards the so many problems the 1991 Constitution holds, and to which they believe to have held us backward.
Dear @PresidentBio@Cee_Bah, @dsengeh, @UmaruNapoleon, As we embark on this new Constitutional review process, I implore the government to take the following steps to ensure transparency, inclusivity, and successful adoption of the recommendations:
1. Transparency: The entire review process, from the selection of review committee members to the final recommendations, should be conducted transparently. Regular updates and public consultations should be held to keep the citizens informed and engaged in the process.
2. Inclusivity: Ensure that the review committee represents a diverse cross-section of Sierra Leonean society, including experts, civil society organizations, and representatives from various regions and ethnic groups. This diversity will help in generating recommendations that are inclusive and address the concerns of all citizens.
3. Public Awareness: Launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to inform citizens about the importance of the Constitutional review and its role in shaping the nation's future. Encourage active participation and solicit input from the public through various channels, including town hall meetings, surveys, and digital platforms.

FRENCH soldiers in Niger are itching to act. Sadly, there has to be a real, plausible cause for any intervention by them, on ground in Niger. Itβs either ECOWAS starts something & they join in or a rebel group in favor of Bazoum starts a fire somewhere, or something. Other than that, their skills and weapons are gonna continue to waste away as they near the deadline for their departure from the Sahel country.
So, evidently, France and the west are losing their cool. They now know that as far as ECOWAS is concerned, no reasonable action may ever be taken to free Bazoum. Even the US State Department has issued another release, probably the second or third one since the coup, asking frantically for Bazoum to be released. The collective west is desperate and it shows.
So, if ECOWAS isnβt acting, owing to the potential cataclysmic nature of any strike in Niger, if France claims that itβs foreign policy no longer allows it to unilaterally carry out military strikes on even colonies in AFRICA, without provocation, and if thereβs no consensus on a United EU/NATO action as was the case with Libya, what do you think is their last game plan? Iβll tell you: The Stubborn Ambassador!
They know what heβs doing is the height of insanity and insolence. They know his attitude smacks of the lowest grade of madness. They know his arrogance is highly provocative and canβt be tolerated in most parts of the world. They know all these. But what do they do? They nudge him on. They cheer and praise him as the colonial hero of the African βno manβs land.β Its a bloody shame but beyond the shame of the sham, this is a set up. They want our people to move in forcefully so the French military will be activated and then scuffles, and then attacks and counterattacks and then, western help is called and Nigerien/Wagner/Burkina Faso/Mali plus force respond then the full blown war that weβve been trying to avoid is finally unleashed. It wonβt make sense but after a few days in, itβll be accepted as normal and in the end, as Iβve always feared, it is us who will lose big. But God will forbid it.
My suggestion: Since theyβve already cut off power and water supply to the embassy and stopped supplies from getting in, they can impose a no-fly zone over the embassy and literally turn it into a prison for the stubborn guy, but donβt engage in any forceful removal of Itte. Mobilize Nigeriens to relocate to the embassy round about and literally live there. If possible, set up tents and sleep and wake from around the embassy. Civil action is what Iβm talking about. But let not the military police extract him forcefully. Theyβre setting us up. But we are wiser. Africa will win this!
Viva Mother AFRICA!
Have to say Fabrizio was incredible on the Amrabat deal.
β’ Debunked "fake" quote that Amrabat could stay at Fiorentina
β’ Said "no bid yet" when others said we had bid
β’ Insisted Amrabat was "top of the list" despite Gravenberch and Amadou Onana links
β’ Said we would bid when Luckhurst said we weren't really interested
β’ Said Amrabat only wanted United despite other clubs bidding
