Pirates reveals what Mofokeng said when he was wanted overseas last season
Orlando Pirates has officially bidden farewell to Relebohile Mofokeng, revealing how he turned down overseas offers last season.
The player chose to delay fulfilling his dream of going to Europe in order to first fulfill a promise he made to the Sea Robbers fans.
Mofokeng first caught attention in 2022 when he arrived to train with the senior team at Rand Stadium. From day one, the senior players realized that they were looking at a rare talent.
Rele Mofokeng made his senior team debut for Orlando Pirates in May 2023. Before long, he had become one of the most important players in the squad, helping them win the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8.
Pirates revealed that even though he was already wanted by European clubs last year, Mofokeng decided to stay.
"Please, I am not worried about going overseas right now," Pirates quoted Mofokeng as saying. "I want to do everything in my power this season, to try and win the league to please this club and its fans. That is all I am thinking about right now. If the opportunity to go overseas comes after that, it will be great. But for now, let me do everything I can to make our fans happy."
Pirates stated that the player did not just say those words, but he kept them.
After helping Pirates win the Betway Premiership title, Rele Mofokeng has now started a new chapter. He has joined the Belgian side, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, as he begins a journey that is expected to eventually land him in one of Europe's top clubs.
"He made a promise quietly, the way trustworthy people do. He kept that promise," Pirates said.
Now Mofokeng has headed to Europe, but he leaves Orlando as a hero who will always be remembered by the fans.
