What does it mean to be meek?

Most people hear the word and think of someone easily pushed around. But that is not the biblical picture. Meekness is not mousiness. It is strength in humility before God.

In the Beatitudes, Jesus says, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matt. 5:5). He is quoting Psalm 37, which we read today in Bible in One Year. Verse 11 says, "But the meek shall inherit the land." The Hebrew word is anav (עָנָו), a word that describes those who are humble, afflicted, and dependent upon the Lord rather than themselves. It is the opposite of pride and self-sufficiency.

That same word is used of Moses: "Now the man Moses was very meek (anav), more than all people who were on the face of the earth" (Num. 12:3). This hardly means Moses was spineless. He confronted Pharaoh, led a rebellious nation through the wilderness, and interceded before God. His meekness did not consist in a lack of courage but in a life lived in reliance upon God.

When we turn to the New Testament, the Greek word is praus (πραΰς). Jesus applies it to himself: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle (praus) and lowly in heart" (Matt. 11:29). Matthew uses the same word again when Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday: "Behold, your king is coming to you, humble (praus), and mounted on a donkey" (Matt. 21:5; cf. Zech. 9:9).

The meek, then, are not doormats. Moses wasn't. Jesus wasn't. They are men and women who know who they are because they know whose they are. They do not grasp for power because they trust the One who possesses all power. They do not exalt themselves because they know God exalts the humble in his own time.

To be meek is to be conformed to Christ himself. It is to live with a quiet confidence born not of self-assurance but of God-assurance. May the Spirit give us the gift of meekness that we might reflect the image of our gentle and lowly Lord. In him and because of him, we will inherit the earth--the new heavens and new earth that come in the resurrection.
