The Annihilation of the Roman army under the emperor Nikephoros I at Pliska.
Nikephoros I had campaigned successfully against the Bulgars and burned their capital of Pliska in AD 811. But his success was partly due to the fact that the Bulgar army had withdrawn to block the passes of their return journey home.
The emperor grew overconfident and didn’t send scouts ahead before entering the Vărbitsa Pass. By the time they realised the pass was blocked, the trap was sprung and the Bulgars had filled the entrance to the pass.
Foolish Nikephoros set up camp instead of assaulting the wooden palisades blocking his way.
The Bulgars harassed his army for several days before rushing down the hills to massacre the army. The emperor died and his skull was reportedly turned into a drinking cup.
