Illuminated River began as a bold idea: to connect London’s bridges through a single artwork, while each one keeps its own unique identity.   

Five years on, it's the world’s longest public art commission, enjoyed by millions.

Today, as Waterloo Bridge is lit each night as part of Illuminated River, it stands as a reminder of the women whose labour helped shape London’s skyline.

On #InternationalWomensDay, we celebrate the women of Waterloo Bridge.

By the 1930s, the foundations of John Rennie’s original 19th-century bridge were failing, rendering it unfit for modern London, so a replacement was needed.

Despite being hit by German bombers during the war, Waterloo Bridge was completed in 1945, and the women’s contributions were so significant that it became known as The Ladies’ Bridge.
