Karyn Parsons spent six years playing Hilary Banks, the glamorous, carefree socialite on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Hilary loved fashion, attention, and shopping. That was the character, and audiences loved her for it. Millions watched every week.

But when the show ended, the role didn't.

Casting directors kept seeing Hilary instead of Karyn.

Born in Los Angeles on October 8, 1966, Parsons became a household name when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1990. She was just 23 years old, and for six seasons the cast became a second family. She later said she genuinely looked forward to going to work every day.

Then came 1996.

The show ended.

She enrolled in a film program at NYU, helped create a new sitcom called Lush Life, and continued auditioning. Yet opportunities became fewer and farther between.

Parsons has spoken openly about those years. Many casting directors could only picture her as Hilary Banks. Meaningful roles for women of color were already limited, and the offers she received were often shallow and forgettable.

She moved to New York. Started a family. Raised children.

And while acting work slowed down, something else was quietly taking shape.

Her mother, a librarian, worked at a Black history resource center and often shared remarkable stories that rarely appeared in textbooks.

One story stayed with her.

It was about Henry Brown, an enslaved man in Virginia who, in 1849, escaped to freedom by having himself shipped in a wooden crate to the North. History remembers him as Henry "Box" Brown.

Karyn was stunned.

How had she never heard of him?

In February 2005, she decided to do something about it.

She founded Sweet Blackberry, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing overlooked stories of Black achievement to children through animated films.

She had no business background. No roadmap. She later admitted she probably benefited from not fully understanding how difficult the journey would be—otherwise she might never have started.

The first film told the story of Henry Box Brown, narrated by Alfre Woodard.

Garrett's Gift, about inventor Garrett Morgan, narrated by Queen Latifah.

A film about pioneering ballerina Janet Collins, narrated by Chris Rock.

Later, after a successful Kickstarter campaign, she produced a film about Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license.

Misty Copeland would also lend her voice to the project.

Over the years, Sweet Blackberry's films aired on HBO and Netflix, earned Parents' Choice Awards, and reached classrooms across the country. Parsons regularly visits schools, screens the films, and speaks directly with students.

In 2019, she added another chapter to her journey by publishing her first novel.

She has often credited James Avery—the actor who played Uncle Phil—for influencing her. Avery was passionate about history and constantly shared what he was reading. Years later, she realized how much those conversations had shaped her thinking.

At the time, she was best known as the television character who worried about clothes, parties, and handbags.

Today, her legacy reaches much further.

Somewhere in America, a child is learning about a man who literally mailed himself to freedom in a wooden box.

And that story is being told because an actress who struggled to find roles after a hit sitcom refused to let an important piece of history remain forgotten.
