Yesterday I did one job that looks easy but is actually HARD: interpreting.

My boss needed to get some stuff at an Igbo-dominated place, and since he isn’t Igbo, he asked me to accompany him.

My job was simple: listen to the conversations they had after each negotiation and let him know if they were trying to run him street or not. 😂

We spoke English the entire time, and I was acting like I neither speak nor understand Igbo.
To make the pretense solid he called me by my English name the entire time. 😭😂

But one man almost exposed me.

He made this thick, sweet joke in Igbo while talking to one of his guys and OMO, I was fighting for my life trying not to laugh. I had to quickly open my phone and pretend I saw something funny. 😂🤣

Imagine being surrounded by people rapping Igbo and you’re there pretending you can’t hear a word. The urge to respond was HIGH.

Honestly, this was one of the most difficult situations I’ve ever been in because how do you hear your language being spoken right in front of you and just sit there like, “Hmm, interesting.” 😭😂

But my biggest joy was that these guys were actually so nice and sincere.

One of them was even acting as an interpreter just so that we wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. 😂

We laughed, had a good business conversation, and genuinely had an amazing time.

Sometimes you go somewhere expecting to be on guard, only to meet really good people.

Yesterday was a good one.
