For the first time ever, the @OECD's #PISA assessment measured the creative thinking skills of students across the world, with some interesting results.
Here are some key takeaways that show the importance of building opportunities for creative thinking, imagination and a growth mindset in children that we hope the new Government in power @UKLabour and the Secretary of State for Education @bphillipsonMP can take onboard.
➡ Most of the countries and economies that scored above the OECD average in creative thinking also outperformed the OECD average in mathematics, reading and science.
➡ Indices of imagination and adventurousness, openness to intellect, curiosity, perspective taking and persistence are positively associated with creative thinking performance.
➡ Classroom pedagogies can make a difference. Across OECD countries, between 60-70% of students reported that their teachers value their creativity, that they encourage them to come up with original answers, and that they are given a chance to express their ideas in school. These students scored slightly higher than their peers in creative thinking, even after accounting for students and school characteristics and their mathematics and reading performance.
➡ Socio-economically advantaged students outperform their peers on average showing the increasing need for creative thinking opportunities for children from underserved areas.
