Accurate race & ethnicity data are essential. But data collection must be improved – including with a new, discrete ethnic category for people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
We spoke with @iMayaBerry and @nedasoc about why it matters.https://t.co/yJOQ4fZmJb
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA Sorry. Trying to provide context but happy to take this offline as this is a complex topic hard to do on here. Whole point is self-identification tho--no one can choose for you what to check or how to identify. For example, you would check MENA and then indicate Palestinian.
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA Releasing a campaign page on how to provide input shortly so that others can provide feedback too. Finally, to give you a sense of how much we understand the point you're making, here is the guidance we provided for the 2020 census. Note the example. https://t.co/cLcwxOyept
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA We've advocated sub-boxes be assigned to largest groups by U.S. pop (like Lebanese, Iranian, Egyptian), while also using examples that include a trans-national group, a Gulf population (like Iraqi, Yemeni) & Arabic-speaking country in Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g., Sudan, Somalia).
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA That choice is usually made by listing the examples with the largest groups by population size. Hence way you see Lebanese for example.
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA The examples provided in the initial draft of the questionnaire are just that and we, like many others, will be providing feedback on which ones should be listed.
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA MENA is a geographical category that includes the 22 Arab countries, plus Iran, Turkey and Israel. We've also argued for Trans-national communities to be included (Assyrians/Chaldeans, Kurds, Amazigh).
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA The fact that notice seeking input includes a proposal to adopt a distinct MENA reporting category as part of combined race/ethnicity question is major development for all of have been working for decades to address massive undercount of our community—basically rendered invisible
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA We all now have 75 days to provide our input on what we think of the proposal. inhttps://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/01/27/2023-01635/initial-proposals-for-updating-ombs-race-and-ethnicity-statistical-standards
@LexiAlex@RepRashida@AAIUSA I'm limited because Twitter but I will do my best. First, sample provided is the initial proposal (key) of the federal working group that will make the recommendation to the Office of Management & Budget to revise the standards for how race and ethnicity data is collected.
@LexiAlex@RepRashida Hi @LexiAlex. Long-time follower & I'd be happy to connect on how this is not bad for Palestinians or any other Americans of Arab descent who may not be listed as examples in proposal. @AAIUSA has been working for a MENA checkbox to better count Arab Americans & happy to explain.
Here we go! FRN on OMB's revision of race/ethnicity standards is out tomorrow. Thrilled to see initial proposal includes a #MENA checkbox! Thank you to all our partners who helped get us here. #YallaCountMENAin#2030Census
After decades of work, #ArabAmericans will be counted!
Thrilled about MI but I will remember election for a young mayor showing leadership by rejecting bigotry masked as concern for kids. TY @AHammoudMI! Dearborn is lucky to have you. I know we have much to do but many of us are #ArabAmerican or #AmericanMuslim & an #EqualityVoter.
Waking up to the news on the trifecta in Michigan - state house, state senate, and governor. First time in 40 years!
I have massive #FOMO right now for this upcoming legislature!

When you are the people being resilient, the word often takes on a different feeling--and not always a good one. Watching this man at the end, all these Palestinian heroes honoring the hero that was #ShireenAbuAkleh, they define the power of resilience. #FreePalestine
Palestinians are regularly killed by Israel without consequence. That is part of the brutal occupation and the fact that Palestinian human life is not protected is reprehensible. In the case of Shireen, important to note she is second American citizen killed by Israel this year.
This isn’t the work that @abdallah_fayyad was recognized for as a Pulitzer Finalist but it’s worth a read. A Palestinian from Sheikh Jarrah was honored today with journalism’s most prestigious award for a series on presidential corruption. Goosebumps. https://t.co/tgKwrviPnv
