I could coin the phrase PSD & PSG (PostStressDefeat, and PostStressGrowth) to apply it to the classroom. Writing tests, navigating relationships, learning in general, can be stressful. But they can either be beaten down & defeated, or they can learn and grow from the experience.

I learned a new term today, PTG (Post-Traumatic Growth), a term in the field of psychology that describes the phenomenon of bouncing back stronger after traumatic events. Applying it to the classroom, I am thinking I want to teach my students a toned-down version...

2of2 Eg. T: Yes! But now I want to undo all of that to figure out the mystery number, so just x=2... How would I go about 'undoing' what I did? S: Working backwards, I would have to take away 2, then divide by 4, because i know that the order I 'undo' the two operations matters.

I have been having some success teaching my Ss about algebra using the phrase "mystery numbers", working backwards (starting with the answer and building the question, then asking them to find the answer again). It seems to help with understanding. Thoughts? #IteachMath #mtbos
