Since October 2023, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have carried out at least 100 attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea, threatening international shipping. iMEdD mapped the illicit arms routes to the Houthis, spoke with an executive at a private maritime risk management firm, and investigated documents on US operations and armed data on Yemen’s rebel activity.

On the night of July 16, 2022, the pilot of an Antonov cargo plane reported an engine failure. Shortly after, the aircraft crashed west of Kavala, Greece, prompting authorities to cordon off the area for miles. Its cargo, weapons and ammunition, was linked to a Serbian arms dealer. An investigation by iMEdD and the KRIK network has uncovered several shadowy aspects of this story.
