when a nri sanghi tried schooling Rahul gandhi......
Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with Suresh kumar Gupta took place during his early March 2023 UK visit, at an Indian Journalists’ Association (IJA) event in London, in the context of his controversial Cambridge lecture.
Background;
On 28 February 2023, Rahul Gandhi (then a Visiting/Honorary Fellow-linked figure at Cambridge Judge Business School) delivered a lecture titled “Learning to Listen in the 21st Century.” In it, he alleged that Indian democracy was under attack, institutions (Parliament, judiciary, press) were being constrained, minorities were targeted, and that Pegasus spyware had been on his phone (and those of other politicians). He also spoke about production shifting to China and the need for democratic systems.
The lecture drew sharp criticism in India from the BJP & others as an “anti-India tirade” from foreign soil. The interaction with Suresh Gupta
At the subsequent IJA “India Insights” interaction in London (around 4–5 March 2023), veteran London-based journalist Suresh Gupta intervened during the Q&A. He introduced himself as settled in London since 1961, working for the New World newspaper, & claimed long personal connections to the Nehru-Gandhi family:
He said he knew Indira Gandhi (describing her as like an elder sister) from his time at All India Radio (1958–61) & had met Jawaharlal Nehru (going to Teen Murti House for signatures via organisations like Bharat Lok Samaj).
Gupta advised Rahul against criticising India abroad. He recalled that after Indira Gandhi’s imprisonment by the Morarji Desai government, at a London press conference a journalist asked about her prison experience and she replied that she did not want to say anything bad about India there. Gupta told Rahul: He was being constantly attacked in the Indian media for the Cambridge lecture.
As a well-wisher who hoped to see Rahul become Prime Minister, he should take a lesson from Indira Gandhi’s example.
He also asked whether, in nine years of BJP rule, Modi had done anything good for India.
Rahul Gandhi’s response
Rahul asked Gupta whether he had actually watched the Cambridge lecture. Gupta admitted he had only “heard about it,” not seen it. Rahul replied that it was “interesting” Gupta had formed an opinion without viewing it, and emphasised the need for an informed view. The moderator/IJA president Danish Khan supported Rahul, interjecting positively.
Videos of the full IJA interaction (including this exchange) are available on Rahul Gandhi’s official YouTube channel and other platforms. Coverage framed it variously as Gupta “schooling” or advising Rahul on patriotism (drawing from Indira’s example), or as Rahul effectively shutting down an uninformed critique.The episode remains a frequently referenced moment from that UK trip, often linked in titles and discussion to the Cambridge lecture even though the direct exchange occurred at the London journalists’ event.
