It's possible to grow food without harming our environment. It's possible for all of us to feed themselves with dignity. It's possible to beat #Climatechange, achieve #ZeroHunger & #GoodHealth in a sustainable way. ⏩If we give power back to the people. Fund the right systems.
More and more families are choosing compost sanitation in rural Uganda with the help of @IMOutreach.
This decentralized shift to a better sanitation method is as organic as the fertilizer each home produces. We’re approaching 600 households that have made the move.
At our most foundational, we’re a group of families helping families.
We operate through the intersection of medical expertise, social innovation, creativity, and local context.

@IMOutreach Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (intestinal parasite infection) prevalence among school children before and after launch of #compost#sanitation.
Total STH prevalence among school children fell from 73.7% to 23.4%.

Is thermophilic #compost a viable method of #sanitation for rural schools in the Global South?
Two tables:
1. Thermal death points for common parasites & pathogens
2. Internal temperatures of compost bins in rural Ugandan schools (bolded temps are pathogen-killing)

This data is part of why groups like @IMOutreach, @SOILHaiti, and @Sanergy are utilizing container-based sanitation.
Compost sanitation is conducive to greater health of both people and earth.
The tangible benefits are why more and more people are jumping on board.
Converting pit latrines to #compost toilets was one aspect utilized by @IMOutreach to decrease disease in the #Ugandan Highlands where farmers struggle. But another benefit is harvest time. The first coffee tree is unfertilized. The second one was fertilized with compost.

We are thrilled to have won the 2020 @M3Conference Poster Competition this past weekend!
Our winning poster highlights our findings on the health effects of compost sanitation in Uganda's rural West Nile region.

Both Sunday (Photo 1 in orange with his mother & siblings) and Florence (Photo 2) are now healing “competitively” at home after visiting our wound clinic in late 2019.
“We are waiting for who will get healed faster. You will see their wound photos [soon]. All are amazing.”
Panyango village members took part in compost #sanitation training today before launching their own compost toilets at home.
65 Panyango households, including that of the LC1 chairman, are making the shift to compost toilets in lieu of pit latrines and open defecation.
After a month in the hospital, Sunday is preparing for discharge!
After clearing the infection with antibiotics and debridement, it was possible to proceed to skin grafting.
And it looks great with no evidence of residual infection!
Sunday's wound is scheduled to be unwrapped in the OR tomorrow.
If it has healed sufficiently, he'll be put on oral antibiotics & discharged. If not, he'll spend more time in the hospital to monitor his progress.
We're hoping for a good report from tomorrow's evaluation!
Sunday had surgery last Thursday. Part of the infected bone was removed, a wound vac is in place, and he is on his feet.
Anticipating a steady recovery!

We met 12-year-old Sunday when he was brought into one of our open wound clinics in Uganda's Zombo District. He presented with an aggressive wound that had robbed him of any hope of recovery. He was at risk for sepsis, loss of limb, and loss of life.

The wound was large, covering the lower leg & foot, with exposed & necrotic bone. Antibiotics were not enough. Arrangements were made to admit him to a rehabilitation hospital in Entebbe & surgery is scheduled for this week.
