In 2024 after my apprenticeship, I was about to start my business and while I was waiting for orders and commissions, I was studying different kinds of furnitures on Pinterest. I had a book where I dissected furnitures I saw on Pinterest and how they were made.

While I was studying, one particular furniture stood out, the rotating shoe rack. I seen artisans make it in Nigeria but I noticed that, theirs were not detachable. The challenge is that, this shoe rack is bulky and heavy, it has to be detachable for easy logistics. So I set to work

I spent two months testing and trying different method. There was the option of making the columns asymmetrical but it wasn’t giving. Few months after I cracked it, a client reached out to me to make a 5 tier rotating rack for her and I delivered flawlessly.

I love minimalist furnitures.

Before I got into furniture making, I saw minimalist furnitures as cheap and simple but as I got into the craft, I was shocked.

The beauty of minimalism is its simplicity, that simplicity must be flawless else the whole purpose is defeated. Maximalism and bold furnitures do not require too much attention to detail and precision unlike minimalism.

The process and time involved makes minimalist furniture more expensive, it also consumes a lot of materials as error can be easily detected. While making minimalist furniture, if an artisan makes a mistake, they may have to redo it. So, next time an artisan gives you price for that “simple” platform bed, don’t panic, they’re not trying to scam you.😊

I learnt cabinetry under an Ekiti man, Oga Josie. He is one of the best artisans I’ve met and I’m privileged to learn under him. He did woodworking before transitioning into cabinetry, which gave him an edge.

My Oga’s niche is bed making and he catered to resellers, more like B2B. He had a particular bed he made and it was called the “Jagaban bed”, he is so good at it that all of us know how to make it with our eyes closed😂. Whenever an order came it, there was division of labour. I would make the bed upright and bedside drawers, my senior apprentice would make the headboard and dressing table and my Oga would make the footboard.

I made bedside so much that I became tired of it and told myself that I would never make the regular bedside in my workshop😂

Meet the Sóma Bedside.

Soma is a variation of Isioma😂, my Oga found it hard to pronounce my name, so he christened me “Soma.” It was only Chika that called me Isioma properly, others called me anything but Isioma. Till today, Florence still calls me “aunty Izoma”😂😂😂 and some of my Oga’s peers called me the first Female Igbo name that comes to their mind when they see me.
