@MrMaitra The guy was a fantasist, whose delusions went beyond simple plagiarism. Of course he would be a story. But really LJMU was to blame for giving him a pass on the plagiarism, not Cams. The tragedy was that a funny story got caught up in culture wars, when he was clearly ill.

Bottom line: everyone in the West want peace and the frozen border is the most obvious answer. BUT Putin doesn't want that, he wants all of Donbas surrendered.

@simon_schama The US has lost it's moorings. It's obsession with race-politics (both left and right) has lead MAGA to believe all kinds of wild fictions onto 'pure and manly' Russia and project their anxieties about cultural change onto Anglophone allies. It's like the Confederates won.

@DRJO1965 @admcollingwood Yes, but the alternatives are also unclear. For Europe fossil fuels are expensive, prone to spikes and the whims of foreign autocrats + long-term finite. New nuclear fission is eyewateringly expensive to build and dispose of. Renewables are price and variable but reliable.

@admcollingwood A strong post. I totally agree. Europe has nothing to compare with the US shale revolution. No source of cheap domestic fossil fuel. It's no coincidence that UK was doing well in the '90s/'00s when oil production peaked, or the US pulled ahead post '06 when fracking got underway

The oil boom + cheap money was a big background factor.

@A_Melikishvili @ABarbashin I agree MAGA continues, I disagree it withdraws from NATO. Why would it? There is no domestic constitutency to support it. Withdrawing from NATO and thereby it's European (and many international) bases would easily be the biggest geopolitical hit to the US since 1942.

Seizing Narva will bring Poland + JET into play immediately. Even if a blitz was successful. It would loss soon after. Estonia won't then walk away from NATO.
