What is the price of a life in PM Modi’s India?

For millions of ordinary Indians, the answer seems to be: nothing.

The BJP government cannot escape responsibility for a system where preventable deaths have become routine.

👉 1.68 lakh people die in road accidents every year. In 2024 alone, 2,385 Indians lost their lives due to potholes.

👉 10,546 farmers and agricultural labourers died by suicide in 2024. That is nearly 28 lives lost every single day.

👉 More than 5,700 women continue to die annually in dowry-related deaths, while conviction rates remain abysmally low.

👉 Around 27,000 Indians die in fires every year, many due to violations of basic safety norms and regulatory failures.

👉 At least 859 sanitation workers have died cleaning sewers and septic tanks since 2014 despite manual scavenging being illegal.

👉 India has over 62 million stray dogs and recorded 3.7 million dog-bite incidents in 2024, while governments continue to look away from a growing public safety crisis.

👉 More than 50 million cases remain pending in Indian courts, allowing those responsible for preventable tragedies to evade timely accountability.

👉 Nearly 73% of Indians still lack health insurance, while public health expenditure remains among the lowest in the world at just 1.3% of GDP.

The BJP government excels at publicity campaigns, but when it comes to protecting citizens, enforcing safety standards, ensuring accountability, and delivering justice, the report card is devastating.

A nation aspiring to be a global power cannot continue treating the lives of ordinary Indians as expendable.
