A tapestry of petals and a celebration of heritage, the Athapookkalam is a cherished Onam tradition. Derived from Poo (flower) and Kalam (artwork), this intricate floral carpet is laid out at home entrances as a colourful welcome to King Mahabali.

The tradition spans ten days, starting on Atham with a single ring of yellow Thumba flowers. A new concentric layer is added each day, expanding in size, colour and geometric detail until Thiruvonam. At its centre, a lit Nilavilakku (lamp) and Thrikkakara Appan pyramids are placed as part of the traditional celebrations.

Beyond its visual beauty, creating a Pookkalam brings families and neighbours together to gather blossoms and create art. It remains a timeless symbol of unity, prosperity and Kerala’s rich cultural legacy. 🌸✨
