Minsk, 2014: ceasefire signed. Violated within days.

Minsk, 2015: ceasefire signed on a Thursday. Debaltseve — a Ukrainian city — falls the following week, while the ink is still wet.

The grain deal, 2022: signed, used, discarded when convenient.

Istanbul, 2022: Russia’s own draft demanded a Ukraine disarmed to parade strength. That is not a treaty. That is a surrender schedule.

Four signatures, four violations, one pattern: Moscow treats every agreement as a reload interval — a pause to reconstitute, then resume.

So no, the problem is not that nobody tried diplomacy.

The problem is that with this Russia, a treaty is not the end of the war.

It is the war, continued on paper.

Correct. It will. Let me describe the ending, since its advocates never do.

We know exactly what Russian occupation looks like, because Ukraine has liberated towns and counted. Bucha lived under Russian rule for thirty-three days: 458 bodies. Torture basements in district after district, standardized like franchises. Twenty thousand children deported for ‘reeducation.’ Mayors executed. Teachers filtered. Mass graves with bound wrists.

Now extend thirty-three days to forever, and one town to a nation of forty million.

That is the ‘peace’ this arithmetic purchases.

If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends — not as a flag on a map, but family by family, basement by basement, off camera, for years.

Weapons are not prolonging this war. They are the only thing standing between an entire nation and Bucha at scale.

La femme photographie l’incendie avec son téléphone. Mise en abyme totale : nous documentons notre disparition au lieu de l’empêcher.

Cette image dit tout. Le déni, le confort, l’habitude. Nous sommes tous sur cette plage. Nous voyons tous le nuage. Et nous restons assis, parce que l’eau est bonne et qu’on a posé nos congés.

In 2018, Aughinish Alumina exported only 16% of its alumina to Russia.

In Q1 2026, they initially said it was 83% and now say it’s 51%.

That’s at least a tripling pre and post war.

It’s clear Russia’s need for alumina is war related.
