@MagisterConway@abrahampiper I don’t have the OED at hand, but wouldn’t be surprised if ‘lyke’ in the OP means ‘likely’ (as in “my grave is like to be my wedding bed,” though I recognize that the structures of those two sentences differ as well)
@MagisterConway@abrahampiper I’m surprised the OED considers that sentence (and usage) to be like(!) the others, in all of which (except the first) ‘like’ is accompanied by an adjective and none of which (except the first) it goes with the verb ‘to be’
@newsomin2024 @notcapnamerica (But I’m more than happy for someone to use a wedding speech as a chance to be funny, especially when the person is indeed funny)
@newsomin2024 @notcapnamerica This is just a reel of the laugh lines; the full speech is about 5x as long, with the other parts very focused on the couple
@CHISALOVEBOT Definitely deceptive and disgusting. I will note that, as a former evangelical, I knew the instant I saw the bible reference ‘29:11’ that the org must be evangelical; just confirmed via google that it is indeed so, and has the intention to “redirect our students to Jesus Christ”
@AMilitantAgnost@pinkfloydfan18@jyothi17750159 (It may well be that Huxley has a narrower definition of agnosticism; I'd be interested in exploring that. In general terms, though, agnosticism regarding any topic is simply "I don't think it can be known for sure" or even just "I personally don't know for sure")
@AMilitantAgnost@pinkfloydfan18@jyothi17750159 In other words, theism/atheism refers to which half of the scale from "there is no god" to "there is a god" you land on (>50% = theism; <50% = atheism). Agnosticism refers to your degree of certainty (<100% = agnostic). Many atheists (including myself) are also agnostic.
@michaeljcoffey Bailey is my last name, so you can alphabetize according to that. Slocum is my middle name, from my mother’s family; I include both so as to honor both sides of my family. Thanks for checking!
@toutovlepo Let me know if you'd be interested in sharing it as a guest post/series on the TeachHuman blog! It's a great topic. (If you plan to post a lot more and don't want to start your own page, I agree with @welangley that Medium is a good option)
