Had a friend from overseas visit and took him to a AAA game. Made me realize the entire sport is a variation of "____is the rule, except in ____ situation when it's different"
@Philebus9@00jcf00 They--and other colleges--did, and plugged the gap with international students. Each international student is the financial equivalent of 3-4 domestic students. International population at SU has fallen from ~15% to ~5% of the student body. That hurts a lot.
nothing, really. It serves a soapbox moment for all translation: Stop worrying if the language is too modern, but about imparting the tone and mindset of the current reader. Stop looking for gotcha moments and anachronisms. Look for the subtext.
Translation is never a simple replacement of words, choice matters in those words. For decades, the standard English translation of Camus's *The Stranger* opens with "Mother died today. Or, maybe, yesterday; I can’t be sure.” It's direct, somewhat formal, and removed.
That trailer for The Odyssey starting with “tell me about my dad” is like nails on a chalkboard. The term “dad” was invented a good 2,000+ years after the Odyssey was written
“Maman died today." No translation, no issues in connotation. Leave the word alone. Throughout Ward's translation, he uses more subtlety sentimental language and it truly adds to the English reading.
What does this have to do with The Odyssey in 2026?
Surprise — Katie and Allison Crutchfield's new band with MJ Lenderman and Brad Cook is called Snocaps, and their debut album is out now:
