The Shannon Protection Alliance was formed in 2007, to resist Water Abstraction plans and to oppose any action that may be harmful to the river system.
Parteen Regulating Weir on the Lower River Shannon SAC today. Over 97% of the flow is still being abstracted here by @ESBGroup. The water is sent down the headrace canal to the hydroelectric station. This excessive abstraction is incompatible with EU Directives & conservation.
Fish pass at Parteen Regulating Weir blocked again today as always. This @ESBGroup salmon hatchery has only caused damage to the River Shannon - especially to the genetics of the salmon population - but the broodstock collection programme also causes a major fish passage problem.
We'll put David, especially the analagy with Heating Oil Tank, but the sad reality is that when you include customer side leakage the real figure is c 56%, there's no shortage of water in Dublin planning to fix leaks over next 100 yrs and not making the target is nuts
@chaburn@KennedyAnalysis@harrymcgee@MurphyEoghan The sad reality is that when all leakage is considered, the real figure is c56%, these pipes will have to be replaced irrespective of the proposed pipeline, fixing leaks at a rate of <.5% a year will not solve the problem, needs an aggressive replacement plan like London
@DDaveeva @GeddyMercury @bamacgabhann@PostPunkPodge River Shannon is primarily an asset of the West, Midlands & Mid West it's a driver of FDI and Tourism, needed as a Water Supply for its catchment area, IW needs to look at what was achieved in London, fix the leaks, pipes are 100 plus yrs old you have to do it anyway
@Jenni4Canesten @bamacgabhann Very much agree, Mr Murphy & Co would have us all pack up and head to the Capital, so much for balanced regional development? An asset of the West & Mid West, hijacked and diverted to sustain FDI in Dublin. In other words screw everywhere else as long a Dublin is ok
@EcofactEcology@ESBGroup Does @harrymcgee know something that the rest of us don't, this project is no way near the planning stage and will be vigorously opposed on many grounds including ecological & cost. Dublin is not short of treated water it just insists on leaking 56℅ of it into the ground.
Staff at Irish Water were paid nearly €5m in performance-related bonuses this year, as hundreds of thousands of people around the country were forced to boil their drinking water.

Any wonder that people don't TRUST you #IrishWater?
Again, we read that water "demand" goes up in winter.
This language is convenient - and misleading.
Network LEAKAGE goes up in winter. That is the single key driver. You have conceded this.
Be transparent.

Shane O Boyle highlights the main findings from the EPA's Water Quality in Ireland 2013-2018 report in the video below.
The report shows that river water quality is deteriorating,
with only 53% of our surface water bodies having satisfactory water quality.
There are many reasons why this should not be built but please note that no Appropriate Assessment and no Environmental Impact Assessment was prepared https://t.co/iUYYAwsoyb
