@o_sneedy Note that communism had the deck stacked in their favor in espionage & diplomacy early on because their ideology had convinced so many fellow-travelers to be more loyal to the Internationale than their own countries.
@VileChud Weren't they terribly maladapted to 19th century warfare? There's a French account in the Napoleonic wars of Russia's Bakshir auxiliaries still fielding horse archers, who of course could not match the firepower of the French formations.
@prometheuus0@kamilkazani Probably because we've built complex machinery in which the price of mistakes are extremely high, but are so productive that work done any other way is almost worthless.
@WeltgeistYT Seems like a moot point when the novel portrays British schoolboys, unless you mean that the more civilised the boys the worse they deal with being stranded (as opposed to the Tonga castaways who stole a boat to escape their residential school).
