As someone living in Cambodia, yesterday’s border clash didn’t feel far away.
People died—Thai civilians, including children—after Cambodian rocket fire reportedly struck border villages. That’s tragic and unacceptable. But it didn’t happen in a vacuum. Thai forces reportedly provoked the shooting, on land already ruled by international courts to belong to Cambodia.
None of this should be normal!
Let’s not cheer from the sidelines like it’s some kind of boxing match. Thai and Cambodian voices alike are posting online like they’re rooting for a team—while real families are burying their dead!
Put the weapons down. Talk. Before more lives are lost for absolutely nothing.
The dust hadn’t even settled when they found him.
Just that day’s morning, the elderly man had gone to the pagoda like he always did. It was a quiet routine, he’d light incense, say a prayer, maybe sit for a while in the shade. The pagoda had always been a place of peace, especially for someone who had lived long enough to see too many storms.
But this time, the storm came from the sky.
Without warning, the roar of fighter jets shattered the somewhat evening calm. Then the explosion. Thai F-16 jets had launched airstrikes near the contested Ta Moan Thom Temple. But this wasn’t a battlefield they hit and it was a pagoda. A civilian space. And for this grandpa… he never stood a chance.
By the time the rescuers arrived, the scene was devastating. Bricks, buddha stupas, statues and broken beams were all that remained. And under the rubble, they found him.
The men moved quickly but gently, lifting his body from the debris with bare hands and broken hearts. Soldiers and civilians worked together. One man held his legs, another supported his back. No one said a word. Their faces said everything.
This wasn’t just about one man. It was about what was lost, a place of worship, a sense of safety, a human life that should’ve been protected.
And for what?
He wasn’t a soldier. He didn’t carry a weapon. He was just someone trying to live his final years in peace. And now, he’s gone. Another casualty of a conflict he had no part in.
This picture tells a story that words struggle to hold. A story of pain, of loss, of innocent people caught in the crossfire of power hungry Thai personnels and the complexity of power struggle in their own world of politics.
Let the world see this. Let them know what happened here wasn’t just a military strike, it was a human tragedy. Cambodia is mourning. And we can’t let this moment pass in silence. We defended not because we are stubborn and risking lives. The message has always been clear and loud. We are no longer tolerate disrespect and have no choice but to seek peace amidst the war.
