How Yorubas Helped Oliver De Coque’s Career After the Civil War

During the war, Oliver was enlisted in the entertainment unit of the Biafran Army. He went around performing for Biafran soldiers up until after the war.

After the war, Yoruba musician Sunny Agaga travelled to Aba to perform for the Igbos for free. This is when Oliver De Coque approached Agaga and begged him to listen to him play.

Agaga liked Oliver and accepted him into his band. Agaga then took Oliver with him back to Lagos, and he was treated like a brother.

After that, Oliver joined another Yoruba musician, Jacob Oluwole, in Oshodi and started playing for him. That’s when they recorded the song “Agbasisi,” which catapulted Oliver into the limelight because Yorubas loved him for that song.

Yorubas didn’t see him as an Igbo man; they saw him as a Nigerian, their brother. All of this was before he became Oliver De Coque.

After that, he joined another Yoruba man’s band, Sule Agboola. That same year, Sule took him to the UK on a tour, where Oliver saved money and bought two guitars, drum sets, and amplifiers.

When they returned to Nigeria he told Sule he would like to form his own band. Sule simply blessed him and let him go. He didn’t stop him or scold him.
Oliver went and formed his own band with the experience he learned from these Yoruba bands.

This is when Oliver De Coque emerged, and he recorded “Messiah Messiah,” which became a hit even in Yoruba land.

Today the same Igbos are tarnishing the image of another Yoruba music icon just to uplift their own who was also helped by Yorubas.

Yorubas did not hate Oliver when he was on the Biafran side. They took him like a brother. They see him first as a brother from another mother
