Fact of the Day! Unlike most cats, whose claws are fully retractable, cheetahs have “semi-retractable” claws, meaning they cannot retract them fully into their paws. This, along with their very hard foot pads, allows for excellent traction control and acceleration. It does make them less effective climbers than most cats though, due to the natural dulling of their exposed claws.

Fact of the Day! Although extinct in the wild, there is evidence that Barbary lions still exist in captivity. These lions were used by the Romans in the Coliseum, and were kept in the Tower of London in the Royal Menagerie. Lambert exhibits many traits of a Barbary heritage (in particular, his very long, dark mane, flowing down over his neck and also along his belly).

We would like to take a moment to mention what we're thankful for. We're thankful for our amazing adoptive parents, members and supporters, who all make it possible for us to give these cats a safe home, excellent medical care, a nutritious diet, lots of toys, and tons of love. We're thankful for our volunteers and interns for the hours and hours of work they give to our cats, often doing very unpleasant chores in all sorts of weather. We're thankful for our staff members for their dedication and willingness to do whatever it takes for our cats. And we're eternally grateful to these amazing cats (and other animals), for allowing us to share their world, letting us into their hearts, and making us better people. Fact of the Day! 🦁 Female lions do 85-90% of the hunting for the pride (while males pretty much just do this... like Rafiki here. I will refrain from any comparison to Thanksgiving dinner preparations in most households...). Lions prey on animals from as large as buffalo, hippos and giraffes, to as small as mice! They can even prey on crocodiles. However, up to 50% of the lions’ meals are scavenged from other predators, including hyenas, leopards and cheetahs 🐆
