A hook, a line, and one lucky little grebe.

This young Pied-billed Grebe arrived with fishing line and a hook lodged inside its digestive tract, a life-threatening injury for such a small bird. Our team removed both without surgery, giving this resilient patient a second chance.

“Not having the energy to grow new feathers is kind of like not having enough money to buy a new wetsuit and having to use a ratty old one with lots of holes in a cold ocean,” said Dr. Rebecca Duerr, Senior Director of Research and Veterinary Science.

[International Bird Rescue @IntBirdRescue]

Common Murres were one of the species affected by a CA starvation event that occurred earlier this year, and this may be occurring again. Since August 15, we've received 68 murres, with most showing signs of worn, broken, excessively weathered feathers.

[International Bird Rescue @IntBirdRescue]

Seabirds rely on healthy feathers to stay warm, waterproof, buoyant, and able to swim and fly. But when food is scarce, they may not have enough energy to replace worn feathers during their annual molt, and if not replaced on time, they can have problems surviving.

In Part 3, rescuers take on the next challenge: developing innovative floating platforms for chicks that had fallen from the barges.
