A lot of people just copy a project’s contract address and paste it on CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap. Once they see the total supply, they think they already understand the project. But beyond what you see there, there is something called vesting.
Vesting refers to the portion of tokens reserved for the team, marketing, liquidity, and investors that are usually locked for a specific period of time.
These tokens are released gradually to prevent sudden dumping. Most times, you will not find this information on CoinGecko or Dexscreener.
Here is what to look out for when studying tokenomics:
1. High team allocation (above 20%) often signals greed. It means the project team has too much control and may dump later.
2. Private sale investors usually buy at extremely cheap prices, sometimes 100x lower than the launch price. When their tokens unlock, they sell heavily, causing price crashes.
3. Unclear vesting schedules are a big red flag because they usually mean hidden dumping is coming.
Do not just read the whitepaper and stop there. Check when and how tokens unlock.
You can use tools like TokenUnlocks or read the smart contract to find the exact dates when large token releases will happen.
If a project has major unlocks coming soon, its price is likely to drop no matter how good the marketing looks.
