Montpellier had an easier time. Entering in the 2nd round, they thrashed @FKQarabagh 9-0 on aggregate, before defeating @RCDEspanyol 4-1 in the third round. In the semifinal, they drew 1-1 with @MSVDuisburg in the first leg, but won the second 3-0 to advance with another 4-1 win.

Starting today, we look back at the 1999 #UICup final, still remembered as a classic 21 years later. First out of the three matchups: @HSV vs. @MontpellierHSC.

Hamburg had a tough path to the final. Entering the tournament in the 3rd round, they snuck by @FCBasel1893 3-3 on aggregate, winning on away goals. In the semifinal they faced off with @Trabzonspor, drawing the first leg 2-2 but winning the second 4-1 for a 6-3 aggregate win.

Marseille would win that game 5-1, winning the tie 5-3 on aggregate after a first-leg loss. Ribéry, on the far right of this celebration photo, finished the tournament with 2 goals in 5 games. Marseille were one of 3 co-winners for that year's event, along with @RCLens and @HSV.

Today's spotlight is on #UICup legend Frank Rost. The goalkeeper won the competition a record 4 times with 3 different clubs- 1998 with @werderbremen, 2003 and 2004 with @s04, and 2007 with @HSV. Rost made a total of 29 #UICup appearances, keeping 16 clean sheets.

The biggest victory in #UICup history came on June 26, 2005, as Romanian side Gloria Bistrița defeated Cypriot side @OlympiakosNic 11-0 at home. Bogdan Pereș, Sandu Negrean and Cătălin Bucur all bagged hat tricks, with Szabolcs Székely and Andrei Bozeșan each adding a goal.

The final #UICup match was played on July 27, 2008 at the Daugava Stadium in Liepāja, Latvia. The game, contested by FK Rīga of Latvia and @IFElfsborg1904 of Sweden, finished as a 0-0 draw. Elfsborg won 1-0 on aggregate after Denni Avdić's 18th-minute goal in the first leg.

Elfsborg were named one of 11 co-winners for the tournament, with @SCBragaOficial later being named the overall champion after going the furthest in the UEFA Cup, reaching the Round of 16 (Elfsborg were eliminated in the second qualifying round by @stpatsfc).

Guivarc'h is tied with Uwe Reinders, who scored 18 times in 29 matches with @werderbremen. Bremen won their group twice with Reinders- in 1979, when he scored against @Standard_RSCL and @skrapid, and in 1981 when he scored an amazing 6 goals, including two braces vs. @fc_zuerich.

Did you know? Stéphane Guivarc'h is the #UICup's joint top scorer, with 18 goals in just 18 matches. Guivarc'h was a member of the 1997 @AJA side that won the competition.
