Small flag: "Lake Maftoe" doesn't check out as a real, documented place — no travel guide, geographic database, or stock photo agency uses that name. What this actually looks like is Libya's Ubari Lakes, a chain of salt lakes tucked into the Idehan Ubari sand sea in the Fezzan region.

They're fed by an ancient underground aquifer, not rain, since it barely ever rains there.

Some of these lakes, like Umm el Maa, are so salt-saturated you float in them without trying.

Others haven't been so lucky.

Mandara Lake itself, part of the same chain, has actually dried up completely over the past few decades into a crust of salt and mud, most researchers link it to Libya's Great Man-Made River project pulling from the same ancient aquifer to supply cities on the coast.

So the real story here isn't just a hidden oasis, it's a snapshot of a landscape that's slowly disappearing, one lake in the same chain is basically a ghost of what's shown in this photo.
