@callsofmidas Much bigger & less clean design, older CPU, older motherboard, DDR4, uses a couple off-brand parts, for some reason prices shown are lower than what I see for the same ones, and I'm going to take a wild guess that it doesn't magically assemble and configure itself.
@chernovlosya There are 3 types pretending not to:
-Those selling something else
-Enthusiast DIYers trying to gatekeep, looking down on everyone else
-Fanboys repeating garbage said by their favorite influencers
@ChamsNp@rakitiz_earth@alphafox Sry meant *noticeably* worse. Imperceptible diffs are meaningless. Meets/exceeds >50% of users in the latest Steam survey. Access to Linux desktop, other storefronts, RAM/SSD upgradable, repairable. Only 200+ that are locked to PS is not good. 3 years? SM works w/o sub forever.
@Grummz@METAPCs Yeah, a jet engine the size of a dump truck is totally appropriate for the living room console market. But anything for those sweet commissions I guess.
@alex_fasulo Not quite as bad as everyone's favorite scam, Solar Roadways, but still bad. They shouldn't even think about zoning farm land for solar until every single roof and parking lot is covered in solar panels already.
@ChamsNp@rakitiz_earth@alphafox More expensive.. except the features other consoles lack, no mandatory subscriptions, and access to 1000s of additional games. You can get worse fps on a small number games at 4k w/ the settings maxed. Each console has it's advantages. So what? Competes just fine on its merits.
@GreenChaplin@alphafox That's an illogical statement. Putting a potato in a little box doesn't make it a console either. As I've repeatedly said, the UI, etc. matter too. This is your tangent. You originally redefined the word so you could compare the cost to a totally different class of device.
@ChamsNp@rakitiz_earth@alphafox It competes with consoles by.. wait for it.. being a console. The definition of a console does not somehow prohibit it from having an Intel/AMD CPU. Because then the Xbox and PlayStation aren't consoles either.
@GreenChaplin@alphafox That's literally what I just said. It would still be a Mac, but no longer a *desktop*. Having x86/amd64/etc. hardware inside has zero to do with whether something is or is not a console.
@GreenChaplin@alphafox Being a low-powered or retro game console is something they can and are used for. But that requires the right software to make them suitable for that scenario.
@AerithEnjoyer1@alphafox The fact that it's smaller and cheaper seems pretty great for Valve though. If you want a full-blown desktop there's nothing wrong with that either, but then why compare it to a device for a totally different market? Makes no sense.
@rakitiz_earth@ChamsNp@alphafox "Console" describes the form factor (size, aesthetics, UI, etc). It's very literally a console. "PC" is a platform (components, CPU instruction set, etc). Valve only says that in the context of saying they like to think of it as more than just your typical console.
@AerithEnjoyer1@alphafox If you go Mini-ITX, now you can't even make the claim that it's cheaper. So now you have a larger and more expensive PC vs. the Steam Machine. And, you know what? That's okay. But my point still remains: those are for different markets. Stop trying to directly compare the price.
@holycheems@Grummz To compare apples to apples I think we have to either price it as being ordered from a professional print shop, or include the price of the whole 3D printer. To assume 3D printer ownership in a comparison price as evidence that the SM costs too much is a bit of a stretch IMHO.
@tornligamen7@alphafox Why are you playing word games? It's a console by definition. Valve has said they like to "think of" it as more and better than a traditional console. And they are right. But it's still a console, both in form factor and target market.
@GreenChaplin@alphafox Again you are confusing form factor and platform. Mac parts are literally the guts of a Mac. And if you stuff them (in a functional state) into a tree, it's still a Mac. It's just not a desktop anymore, because that is a form factor. I hope that's clear.
@GreenChaplin@alphafox Yes, that's been their marketing approach. More open/customizable than consoles of old. But just think about how hilariously dumb the "think of" phrasing would be if it weren't technically a console. "We think of the Ford Focus as a whole experience, not as a toaster."
@GreenChaplin@alphafox Again, "console" is a form factor. "PC" is a platform. If you use PC parts, it's a PC. If you use Mac parts, it's a Mac. If you use Atari parts, guess what, it's an Atari. The next Xbox is also going to be a console PC btw.
@tornligamen7@alphafox "PC" refers to the hardware components and software compatibility. "Console" refers to the form factor, UI, and intended use. These are well defined terms and not mutually exclusive. Please do point out where it says "desktop PC" though, which is the phrase I used.
