That supposition is mostly incorrect. Majority of the big technological advances started from random theories no one would have imagined would be impactful at the primitive ideation stages such as nuclear energy, laser technology, MRI imaging, semiconductors, GPS, antibiotics etc. And your last statement agrees with what I’m saying. AI today isn’t new math because the theoretical math preceded deep neural networks and transformers

Exactly. Industry would not have funded a random idea of stimulated emission in 1917 and continued funding it until laser technology became commercially viable in the 1970s to 1980s. Would you fund this if you were the CEO and had shareholders waiting for a dividend or profit? For almost 60 years?
