Merchant Navy Day is observed annually on September 3. In recognition of their sacrifice in World War I, King George V bestowed the title of Merchant Navy on British merchant seafarers. They are often regarded as the forgotten and invisible navy community.

Modern-day merchant seafarers are responsible for the Isle of Man’s imports, including food and other daily products and goods. On this day, the Red Ensign is flown across the country to honor the brave people who serve in the Merchant Navy.
