Short range forecast
Glisan: Heat dome dissolves next week. Farther out - el nino will have impact on harvest. End of July could be cooler. Higher implications of el nino will happen in winter. Look at end of growing season to be less extreme.
Jet stream wavier?
Glisan: The polar cap is melting. More open ocean is warming the Arctic. If you relax gradients between, that makes more waves in jet stream. Expect more small width of storms and more isolated.
Mold issues
Glisan: Haven't seen southern rust return yet. That was a black swan event last year. Clean slate this season. Some conditions are there for mold, other fungal things could return.
Summary of WX each week - standing water
Glisan: Soybeans don't like wet feet. If several inches of water, could reduce yield but can handle more drought. Saturated soils and heat domes will cut into yield potential. These WX extremes cause stress.
Year comparison
Glisan: Could be the warmest year on record. Last five years has been the warmest on record. Very warm decade. We're leaning more warm and wet.
El Nino:
Glisan: Potential to be a strong one - 82/83 was one - part of a larger series of conditions. Biggest impact on cold weather spots right now. Not seeing fingerprints yet, but look fall into winter. Typically cooler in fall/winter and also dryer winters.
Tornadoes in Iowa
Glisan: Above average - 2024 was more active. We did get some rainfall, that helped unless 12 inches. We had one derecho and it impacted Illinois more than Iowa. @JustinMGlisan
