CHOPPIES BACK ON AFRICA’S BIGGEST STOCK EXCHANGE: Botswana's largest retailer, Choppies Enterprises, will resume trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) after a two-year suspension for failing to publish audited financial statements within a specified period of time
INFLATION INCREASES TO 2.2%
The annual inflation rate in Botswana rose to 2.2 percent in October 2020 from 1.8 percent in September, increasing by 0.4 percent to reach its highest level in six months after reaching a record low of 0.9 percent in June and July
Exchange rates 07/10/2020 - The Pula appreciated against the ZAR, EUR and GBP while it depreciated against the USD, CNH and JPY with the BWP/USD being the biggest loser at -0.34%.
Real gross domestic product (GDP), which ensures the total output of goods and services in the country at a specific period, plunged from P12.5 billion in the first quarter to P18.8 billion, reflecting a 24.8% percent fall in economic activity between June and August.
BOTSWANA ECONOMY IN WORST ECONOMIC CONTRACTION SINCE INDEPENDENCE
The Botswana economy recorded its biggest contraction, offically entering recession, with the economy expected to contract further this year in what could be the country’s worst economic year.
INFLATION INCREASES TO 1% IN AUGUST 2020
Headline inflation rose marginally from 0.9 percent in July to 1 percent in August 2020, remaining below the lower bound of the Bank’s medium-term objective range of 3 – 6 percent, significantly lower than the 2.9 percent in August 2019
The country’s merchandise exports have been depressed for most of the year due to the coronavirus-induced
lockdowns and movement restrictions, while imports have moved marginally higher than their usual postion as the economy has restarted.
MAY TRADE DEFICIT REVISED BY P2.4 BILLION
Statistics Botswana this week revised the May trade deficit to P1.8 billion from P4.2 billion citing the late confirmation of diamond exports in that month.
The revision means that from being the worst monthly trade shortfall for the year, May now becomes the third worst performer after February (P2.7 billion) and March (P1.9 billion).

The 16 percent trimmed mean inflation and inflation excluding administered prices remained
unchanged at 1.9 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively, in the same period
INFLATION REMAINS CONSTANT
In February 2020, headline inflation was 2.2 percent, the same as in January 2019, remaining below the lower bound of the Bank of Botswana’s medium-term objective range of 3 – 6 percent, and lower than the 3.3 percent in February 2019.
