Hospice, Heal Thyself

Authentic hospice care is at once highly professional and sophisticated and intimately personal. It can transform patients’ experiences and families’ lives. We must not lose this level of human caring.
The changes we made were straightforward, but not easy. Simplicity in healthcare often takes careful preparation. Our striking success in making goals-of-care conversations routine required 8 yrs of strategic systems change.
It feels well worth the effort! @GeriPalBlog
Can simple change in @HeyEpic improve care across a big system? Turns out it can. At least for goal-directed care.

Robby passes on four phrases his beloved mentor taught him: "I love you," "Thank you," "I forgive you" and "Please forgive me." The inspiration came from palliative care physician and author Ira Byock, in his book, "The Four Things That Matter Most."
Hospice & palliative Care are at a crossroads. Uneven quality and corporate greed threaten its future. We need a four-part Strategic Path Forward. https://t.co/CeMDp2Id5u

There’s a Medicare scam out there that can really hurt people, and I want to make sure you’re aware! People are targeting older Americans to trick them to sign up for Hospice without their knowledge.
If you think you may have experienced fraud, call 1-800-Medicare to report it. To learn more, go to https://t.co/FTOUhM7V8W
World Day is Oct 12. WHPCA is celebrating 10th anniversary of WHO resolution calling on countries to “strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care.” I gave £100 to support WHPCA’s global efforts. Please join me. #CompassionateCommunities
So many decades of close friendship, so many hours of the privilege of sitting with dying people, the joy in our connection runs like a river between us.
We mourn the recent passing of Dr. Bernice Catherine Harper, MSW, MScPH, LLD, and celebrate her remarkable life of leadership and service to our professional community and the world. Dr. Harper’s lifelong leadership had profound and lasting positives impact across social work; hospice care; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Gentle reminder about the “F-word” (not that one).
The concept of “Medical futility” has an important place in academic and philosophical discussions of ethics and practice, but the word rarely builds bridges at the bedside.

Deeply meaningful to talk with Ned Buskirk, host of the Yer Going to Die podcast, as he is grieving the death of his stepmom. Honest and soulful stuff. Remember to breathe…@YerGoing2Die https://t.co/j41JNEmkCx
I've urged national hospice organizations to dispel the urban legend that hospitals are forbidden to develop hospice preferred provider lists. @NPHI_News stepped up! This statement will improve hospice referrals, and prevent suffering. Great work!

Too Little, Too Late aptly describes the plight of dying people and their families in Australia. Leaders in government, healthcare providers, and payers need to step up and take tangible steps. @Violet_org_au is showing what real leadership looks like!

Honoured to be given the Carmelita Lawlor Lectureship from @UofTFamilyMed at #HPCO2024 last night - transforming care through advancing a Cicely Saunder’s inspired ‘culture of palliative care’ that leaves no one behind. “We’ve got you. You matter.” #palliativecare
