Herpetofauna in meliponaries: predation or shelter?

A new study published in Herpetology Notes investigated 111 stingless beehives (Meliponini) at the Bioparque da Amazônia (Amapá, Brazil) to understand how amphibians and reptiles utilise these managed microhabitats. 👇🧵

• The occurrence of the parrot snake Leptophis ahaetulla points to an active trophic web (bees ➡️ anurans ➡️ snakes) sustained within the apiary!

🔍 Key findings:

• Scinax ruber predominantly utilised unoccupied hives as diurnal shelter (with no evidence of bee predation).

• Trachycephalus typhonius was observed actively preying on worker bees at hive entrances.

The Gold Mask of Tutankhamun (1334-1325 BC) :

Of the 5,000 artifacts found in King Tut’s tomb, the 3300 year-old mask is one of the most famous ancient artifacts. But did it even belong to King Tut himself?

In 1922, a British archaeologist stood in the Valley of the Kings in the cliffs behind Luxor, Egypt. In the previous decades, more than 60 ancient tombs had been investigated and exhumed. Many Egyptologists believed all tombs had been identified and there was nothing left to unearth. Archaeologist, Howard Carter, sensed otherwise. Carter was right, and he soon identified a single stair leading down to a tomb entrance. After years of excavation, his team reached the inner chambers and found a mummified pharaoh. At the time, scholars didn’t know much about King Tutankhamun, the boy king who ruled for about a decade.

Carter wrote of the moment it was discovered :

"The pins removed, the lid was raised. The penultimate scene was disclosed – a very neatly wrapped mummy of the young king, with golden mask of sad but tranquil expression, symbolizing Osiris … the mask bears that god's attributes, but the likeness is that of Tut.Ankh.Amen – placid and beautiful, with the same features as we find upon his statues and coffins. The mask has fallen slightly back, thus its gaze is straight up to the heavens."

The death mask is considered one of the masterpieces of Egyptian art. It originally rested directly on the shoulders of the mummy inside the innermost gold coffin. The mask is 54cm tall, 39 cm wide and 49cm deep. It is constructed of two sheets of gold that were hammered together and weighs 22.5 pounds (10.23kg), as well as copper, coloured glass and gemstones. Tutankhamen is depicted wearing the striped nemes headdress (the striped head-cloth typically worn by pharaohs in ancient Egypt) with the goddesses Nekhbet and Wadjet depicted again protecting his brow. He also wears a false beard that further connects him to the image of a god as with the inner coffin. He wears a broad collar, which ends in terminals shaped as falcon heads. The back of the mask is covered with Spell 151b from the Book of the Dead, which the Egyptians used as a road map for the afterlife. This particular spell protects the various limbs of Tutankhamun as he moves into the underworld.
