Some of us grew up with Igbo friends that we never even tried to find out which states they hailed from.

It is of late that I hear some people calling other tribes names like "Ofe mmanu, Yanmirin etc.

And the hate on SM seems over bloated out of proportion too.

As an Igbo, during my early days while growing up in Southwest, my mother and father never for once told me and my siblings to avoid playing with anyone from this tribe or that tribe. Infact I have never heard them refer to any tribe with derogatory names. I believe I speak for a lot of Southeasterners as well or I could be wrong.

But as a kid, I kept hearing people refer to me as "Omo yibo" or "Omo nna" which they pronounce as "Omo inna". Well it was normal or so it seemed cos I heard it a lot, that it almost seemed like it was my name.

But as an adult, I started to realize that is an undertone actually attached to it. Like a kind of stigmatization or something. Otherwise, why the emphasis "Omo inna"? Can't I just be Chinedu or Gozie? Why does it seem preferable to address me as "Omo yibo"?

I find it really strange that some parents will actually tell their children to avoid other children from other tribes. Like it never crossed my mind until I began to see it that this was actually a thing. It began to make sense to me, no wonder the "Omo inna" thing while growing up.

I told her I don't want to be the oldest man that will be asked to pray if I have to attend Parents' meeting in children's school. She doesn't want that for herself too.

The Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja presided by Justice Abiola Sholadoye has sentenced a 32-year-old street sweeper to life imprisonment for defiling a 14-year-old girl.
