@newstart_2024 Not only can an ai companion not give us the real connection we want, but we cannot properly connect with an ai companion because it needs nothing from us. This is a really key aspect of love that's often overlooked
@UnmarredReality I go back and forth on this. Bad behavior is bad behavior regardless of the object's humanity. On the other hand, I do also worry about the other extreme of overly humanizing llms, and treating them different than you would a person might be helpful.
Language does not equal knowledge
This is obvious
I can say "The sky is blue" and you know this is something I know
I know it because this is an idea I hold in my mind without the aid of language
I can picture it
I could also communicate this in a different language
However language is clearly intricately tied to our understanding
There are many ideas we can't "picture" so we need words to help form them
Language even helps form how we think
For example, the Greek language has six different words that can be translated as "love," all having a deeper and more specific meaning
German has the concept of "schadenfreude," taking joy in others' misfortune
Words shape how our minds think
But getting back to knowledge, it is not inherently dependent on language
It's the other way around: language is dependent on knowledge
Imagine some monkeys found a bunch of books and started copying them
Even though they would be producing language, it is obviously not tied to their understanding of the world
Think about human babies. They experience the world and start to learn it. Only later to they start to map language onto their knowledge
I say all this to tie into ai and how agi could properly be achieved
But I imagine the connections are pretty obvious so I'll just leave it there
@motorhueso There are some ways ai unlocks a new kind of creativity, but when you look at the broader system, you're right, nothing new has been created
@LuizaJarovsky I do wonder if this is a problem that will ever be possible to solve since any kind of self-verifcation system gets you back to the same issue
@atelicinvest We work for a client that is notoriously bad at even understanding what they want, so yeah, it takes a real personal touch to help them figure it out (and be happy they came up with it themselves)
@newstart_2024 This is the victim mentality. That our problems are external and out of our control. Even if they are, it's not helpful to think that way
