The federal government just indicted a man for having good security settings.

Samuel Tunick flew home to Atlanta. CBP grabbed him at the airport, demanded his phone, and told him they did not need a warrant. He had GrapheneOS installed with a duress PIN, a feature that wipes the device instead of unlocking it. The screen flashed. The data went away. Now he is facing a federal charge for destruction of property to prevent seizure.

Read that again. They said they did not need a warrant to take it. Then they charged him with a crime for the state of the thing they did not need a warrant to take.

The agents floated child exploitation as the reason for the search. His lawyers say the actual interest was his association with the Cop City opposition. Funny how that works. The scariest possible accusation gets deployed at the checkpoint, and the political one shows up in the paperwork later.

Here is the principle. Your phone is not a suitcase. It is your papers, your effects, your entire life, and the Fourth Amendment does not evaporate because you are standing on a particular square of linoleum at Hartsfield-Jackson. A duress PIN is a lock. Refusing to open a lock is not obstruction. If the government wants what is behind it, there is a well established procedure. It involves a judge.

Encryption is not evidence of a crime. It is evidence that you were paying attention.

A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."

My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."

I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

Eπιχείρησε να ταξ��δέψει στη Μαυριτανία μέσω Τουρκίας τον Μάιο του 2025, αλλά απέτυχε, και αργότερα ταξίδεψε στον Λίβανο μέσω Τουρκίας με σκοπό να κατευθυνθεί στη Συρία και να ενταχθεί στο ISIS. Ενώ βρισκόταν στον Λίβανο, ήρθε σε επαφή με άτομα που πίστευε ότ�� ήταν μέλη του ISIS και αργότερα συνελήφθη στον Λίβανο τον Ιούλιο του 2025, όπου πέρασε τρεις μήνες στη φυλακή. Μετά την απελευθέρωσή του, επέστρεψε στο Βερολίνο τον Νοέμβριο του 2025, όπου συνελήφθη στο αεροδρόμιο και κρατήθηκε προφυλακισμένος μέχρι τον Μάιο του 2026.
Τι θα έπρεπε να κάνει ένα ευρωπαϊκό κράτος αν είχε, όχι πέντε, αλλά μισό δράμι μυαλό; Να στείλει πακέτο μπαμπά, μαμά και κανακάρη αλλαχουακμπάρη από κει πούρθαν, διότι ΠΡΟΦΑΝΕΣΤΑΤΑ η παιδεία που πήρε από το σπίτι του δεν ήταν φιλοευρωπαϊκή, αλλά ισλαμιστική. Και επειδή δεν το έχει κάνει ακόμα, να νομοθετήσει το αυτονόητο: όταν τα παιδιά που γεννιούνται στην Ευρώπη και πηγαίνουν σε ευρωπαϊκό σχολείο βγαίνουν τζιχάντια, τεκμαίρεται ότι τζιχάντια ή έστω κρυπτοτζιχάντια είναι και οι γονείς. Χάνουν όλοι άσυλο και ευρωπαϊκή υπηκοότητα αν έχουν πάρει, και φεύγουν ολοσούμπιτοι για τις βοθροχώρες τους.
Όμως τι έκαναν οι ψυχοπονιάρηδες Γερμανοί; Καταδίκασαν τον μακελάρη σε 22 μήνες με... αναστολή (!!!) και τον έστειλαν να παρακολουθήσει... μαθήματα αποριζοσπαστικοποίησης (!!!) Θα έπαιζε ο μακελάρης με πλαστελίνες και θα μάθαινε να αγαπάει όλον τον κόσμο! Μέχρι που επιτέθηκε στο gay pride. Και τι είπε ο μέγας πολιτικός ανήρ με το οξύ και σπινθηροβόλο βλέμμα που υποδύεται τον ηγέτη των Γερμανών; «Αυτές οι επιθέσεις θέλουν μόνο να μας διχάσουν. Δεν πρέπει να εκφοβιστούμε.» «Είμαστε μια κοινωνία ανοιχτή και λάτρης της ελευθερίας – και αυτό θα το διαφυλάξουμε και θα το υπερασπιστούμε».

Απορείς: είναι τόσο ηλίθιοι; Προφανώς τα ανθρωπάκια που υποδύονται τους Ευρωπαίους ηγέτες έχουν μονοψήφιο IQ (αθροιστικά), αλλά δεν υπάρχει στο σύστημα εξουσίας ούτε ένας που να πει: "Πού πάμε ρε; Είναι δυνατόν κάποιος που γεννήθηκε και μορφώθηκε στη Γερμανία, αλλά παρ' όλα αυτά ήθελε να ενταχθεί στον στρατό των αποκεφαλιστών του ISIS, να ανανήψει με μερικά σεμινάρια; Είναι δυνατόν ό,τι δεν πέτυχε η Ευρώπη σε 21 χρόνια να το πετύχει με μαθήματα μερικών ωρών;"

Abdul Ballout was sentenced in May 2026 by the Tiergarten District Court to one year and ten months in prison for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. (Code for terrorism)

The public prosecutor's office had demanded two years and ten months and appealed.

Abdul Ballout was arrested in Lebanon and deported as a German citizen back to Germany, as he was born in Berlin.

After the conviction, the police placed him under partial surveillance.

So the Lebanese deported him to Germany, where he attacked a gay parade … sorry but that’s comical

This is the most important difference between the American political system and every European one – and it explains almost everything about how they behave differently under pressure.

The European systems are the accumulated result of centuries of people grabbing, protecting, and occasionally reforming their privileges. The castle became the parliament. The knight became the aristocrat became the bureaucrat. The physical hierarchy of the medieval order dissolved slowly into the institutional hierarchy of the modern state – but the direction of power never fundamentally changed. It flows downward. The state is the source. The citizen is the recipient. Rights are granted, regulated, and can be revoked. The government rules. The people, from time to time, get to choose which version of the ruling class they prefer. But not too much.

America reversed the direction deliberately, constitutionally, and in writing. Power flows upward from the citizen. The government does not grant rights – it is created specifically to protect rights that exist before it and above it. The Bill of Rights is not a list of things the government allows you to do. It is a list of things the government is forbidden to touch. The distinction is not semantic. It is civilizational.

The founders had read their history. They designed against the accumulation of power: separation of powers, checks and balances, federalism, the armed citizen as the ultimate check on all of it. Not a perfect system. A system designed to be imperfect in a specific way – to make the concentration of power difficult, slow, and visible.

Europe reformed its inherited systems. America built from first principles. The European instinct was to trust the institution. The American instinct is to limit it. The gun is the symbol of the difference – not as a weapon but as a principle. In America, the citizen is armed because the citizen is sovereign. In Europe, the citizen is disarmed because the state is sovereign. Everything else follows from that single difference in the direction of power.
