@robbiehendricks Truth. One of our best deals to date was an intro from our insurance broker to another client who wanted to exit a large portfolio.
And from his side, what a great way to position himself to retain a client long-term.
One of the best tax reforms that could happen would be to end withholding, and force everyone to write a check to the govt every year. The pain of this to most people, really seeing how much they’re giving up, would force down rates and shrink government. So it will never happen.
the Ben Sasse / Ross Douthat interview is one of the single best things i've seen in years. I could not more highly recommend dropping everything to go and watch.
@glbaumann@SantiagoPliego The Orvis Clearwater is great, but if you’re serious about getting into it, head to a fly shop to test a few out.

@glbaumann@SantiagoPliego 1. Don’t buy the cheapest rod. You don’t need to drop $2,000, but nicer rods make it easier to feel the weight transfer of the line.
2. Book a guide. They will help teach you casting, knots, etc. but more importantly, will help you get onto fish. You need reps to learn.
Jerry: So, we're gonna lie to the buyer about our margins?
Kramer: It's an add-back for them
Jerry: How is it an add-back?
Kramer: They just add it back
Jerry: Add it back to what?
Kramer: Jerry, all these big companies, they add-back everything
Jerry: You don't even know what an add-back is
Kramer: Do you?
Jerry: No, I don't
Kramer: But they do, and they're the ones adding it back
Callaway acquired Topgolf for $2 billion in 2020 but is now selling the business to a PE firm for $1.1 billion.
Same-venue sales are down double digits, higher rates have destroyed returns, and Callaway's stock is down 50% over 5 years.

If you are young and just starting out, here is my advice.
Job hop until you find a mentor. Don’t worry with money. Worry with learning and opportunity.
Limit your time online. Spend time talking to people irl. This will increasingly be a differentiator.
Read all the time. Listen to podcasts. Be a sponge at work and elsewhere. Don’t stop learning.
Find a church. It is the best community you will find. None of them are perfect but neither are you.
Get married young. Find a spouse with your values. Partners are valuable but sharing the highs and lows of life with someone you know has your back is special.
Have kids early. It will not limit you like you think and it’s one of the great joys of life so enjoy it asap.
Get equity. Could be at a company, could be starting your own business, could even be investing. There are lots of ways to do this but owning assets builds wealth.
There’s so much more that goes into life, but if you can even just aim at those things I can almost guarantee you will be on your way to a fulfilling career and personal life.
Easier said than done of course but so are all the best things worth doing.
I always find it helpful to go with good fiction to get back in the rhythm. Lewis’ Ransom Trilogy or Chesterton’s Father Brown stories are both entertaining and prescient if you haven’t read those yet. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy isn’t fiction but is another excellent option: fun yet insightful.
I'm a couple of days late in reading this, but this is a must-read summary of our current power structure. The "field-space" vs "office-space" distinction should be added to everyone's vocabulary.
