Tomorrow at 14:30 PM NY time, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will gather in full around the Security Council Media Stakeout Area to read a statement on the selection process of the United Nations Secretary General- stay tuned and follow it here: https://t.co/SvYrYQuwTJ
Re sharing my article on Geographical Rotation for the UN SG race and why it is a crucial principle for the P5 to honor at a time where international law and the rules we created are being blatantly violated like no other time after WWII. Precedents matter but also, honoring a slate of perfectly qualified and scrutinized candidates.
“The credibility of the United Nations rests not only on its ability to deliver results, but also on its commitment to the principles, rules, and precedents that govern its work. The selection of its next secretary-general will be a critical test of that commitment.
After five rounds of straw polls, the U.N. Security Council has yet to identify a consensus or compromise candidate. While member states remain cautious about revealing their positions, the continued use of undifferentiated ballots — which means member votes are anonymous — has left the council unable to determine whether leading candidates face opposition from the five veto-wielding permanent members.
Shortly before the council meets again on Oct. 16, this time for color-coded (differentiated) ballots that determine the permanent members’ negative votes, it is crucial that the wider U.N. General Assembly membership expresses its support to qualified candidates from the Latin America and the Caribbean region.”

1/2 I am grateful for the support received from UN Security Council members. Reported results again place me ahead, with consistent backing since July’s first vote. I will keep working with every member to build the consensus needed.
Just left the UN after the color coded ballots. There is intense competition amongst the three leading candidates. However, they all belong to GRULAC (Latin America and the Caribbean) which means there is strong support to follow the geographical rotation principle.
Bureaucracies are risk-averse by nature, so leadership has to bring risk into the equation: the only failure the United Nations cannot afford is not trying. Peace operations need focused, realistic mandates, and member states and the Secretariat need enough trust to tell each other the truth about what is working on the ground. Much of this can be done today. I made this case at the closing session of the Challenges Annual Forum at United Nations Headquarters. My thanks to @ChallengesForum and @FBAFolke for an honest and practical discussion. #newUN

The world has changed dramatically. We should not fear reform, but use our agency to make the best decisions. Women have changed the world for the better before, and we will continue to do so.
Africa and Europe can turn global commitments into results people can see, in health, security, green industrialisation and financing for development. I joined @AfricaEuropeFdn at the @IrishMissionUN in New York for that conversation, with Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs @HMcEntee, and former president of Liberia @MaEllenSirleaf.

People around the world want leadership willing to take risks for peace. The United Nations must become less risk-averse—its biggest risk today is the risk of not trying. Trust is the scarcest and most valuable asset of diplomacy, and the UN must regain it through discipline and delivery.
These are some of the ideas I shared in this article for @TheEconomist. #newUN

Accountability is why I have chosen to step away from my position as the head of UNCTAD during the UN Secretary-General's campaign, and why I will insist on a senior leadership team reflecting the standards we promote.
The United Nations must be an institution where effectiveness is recognized and underperformance has consequences.
As Secretary-General I will commit to transparent, merit-based and geographically equitable appointments. I will uphold a zero-tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse or any unethical conduct.
Transparency and accountability are not administrative labels; they are central to operational impact. I will introduce clear metrics, public reporting, and independent evaluation so that results are measurable.

I ask to be judged by the same standard as every other candidate: the record. I have spent my career leading institutions through reform, making them faster, leaner and more useful to the people they serve. And before every decision, I look at the numbers first. Budgets, results, evidence. The United Nations' next Secretary-General must be the best person for the job. #newUN
Over the past few months I have met with member states from every region, in 27 cities, with Heads of State and Government, Ministers and authorities. Those conversations confirm what my work has already required: strict impartiality, fidelity to the UN Charter, and service to every country, large and small, measured by results in people's lives. That is what the next leader of the UN must stand for. #newUN

#newUN
