I really enjoyed learning about the definition of beauty in Korea from the presentation. I am still fascinated by the use of plastic surgery and the eyelid surgery and how common it is.
I don’t think hallyu is completely a positive thing if it is causing young women from other countries to feel the need to receive plastic surgery in order to look like their favorite Korean actresses. #omg
I find it so surprising that the increase in layoffs of female workers lead to an increase in cosmetic surgery and weight loss among women in Korea on the idea that the layoffs were due to issues of beauty. I think that beauty plays a larger role in employment than we would hope.
I found it interesting how The King and the Clown took such huge steps in terms of homosexual representation, and yet there was still some backlash from gay and lesbian critics on the representation of intimacy in the relationships shown in the film.
I agreed with most of the findings and points from Lee and Parks reverse gender discrimination in Korean comedy article however I think that there is a very fine line between dark humor and outright offensive.
When the study talks about Foucault’s theories of sexuality I found it amazing how much it left out gender differences in sexuality and how gender differences in things like sexual politics have taken so long to be acknowledged.
I find it so interesting how the Korean wave began in a place of wanting to rebuild from financial crisis. Their popularity in the media among Asian Americans is something that was born out of a dire situation turning into a global phenomenon.
I can’t believe that that Korean Teenager tried to make a point that men have it harder than women and are discriminated against. I think the hashtag is very powerful and helpful in today’s society.
Thought the reading was very interesting especially when it talked about who decides what makes someone an “ordinary woman” in Korean Culture and how they are different from feminists.
I’ve really enjoyed Konkuk University students in our class over the last week. It’s one thing to learn in class and read about Korean Culture but to learn about it from these students in their own words has been a very eye opening experience.
Very interested in how Fiske talks about the differences between official culture and pop culture and how official culture is more socially a appreciated among the general population. #interesting
Last Monday class for #RHMS270 of the year. It’s sad tbh..... Also I wouldn’t be able to tweet this if I was “unplugged” like it suggests I be in The Binge Breaker reading. #plugged
