The Cherokee National Forest plans to conduct a prescribed fire on the Watauga Ranger District on Saturday, March 14, 2026, near Hampton, Tenn. The Cedar Gap burn is located approximately 3.0 miles southeast of Hampton in the Dennis Cove community.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that many of you in this "CRIPPLING" area see ICE ACCRETION over 1".

In a storm like this, FREEZING RAIN of that magnitude is a disaster. This could be where some of the biggest impacts lie simply because of extended power loss with very cold air to follow the storm. This is not an exacta, but I wanted you to see where you need to plan for extended power outages from TX in LA,MS, TN over to GA, NC and SC... This is a huge ara of real estate. Expect more fine tuning over time.

The Tri-Cities weather radio (WXK-47) has lost power recently. It's almost assuredly because of a downed power line in the remote mountain that it's on. We don't expect it to return to service today, and it's definitely unsafe to visit for repairs at the moment.

Here's the latest forecast. This is additional rainfall. Winds are expected to increase tonight and peak sometime on Friday morning. The strongest wind gusts Friday will be very dependent on where Helene tracks, with the strongest winds on the "right flank" of the storm center.
